This month's book is not my favorite. We're reading a new-age book called The Untethered Soul and I'm having a hard time powering through it. The central premise is that YOU are actually your consciousness, your ability to perceive, and your inner voice is simply your roommate.
Well, every time I sit down to read this book, my roommate won't shut up.
"If I'm not you, who am I?"
"Hey wouldn't you rather be reading that thriller on your nightstand? You know it's due back to the library in 2 weeks."
"Bored. I'm BOOOORED. BORED."
"Tomorrow is trash day... don't forget the recycling... and what are we going to have for dinner?"
My increased awareness of my roommate just makes her all the more persistent. It has never taken me so long to read 50 pages. I'm not even sure if I'll be able to finish the last 100 or so before our discussion tomorrow.
Luckily, next month is my turn to choose the book. I think my roommate and I will both prefer Octavia Butler's The Parable of the Sower - a chance to get us both out of my head for a little while.
